This is a club show - doors open at 22:00 and the night runs until 04:00.
The Gaslamp Killer's DJ sets are as committed and engaging as his live performance. Behind the decks and an enviable bank of electronics, GLK collides together his broad ranging influences from the music he grew up with - DJ Shadow, Pete Rock, J DIlla - to the Turkish and West African sounds of his parents and his own crate digging escapades, to the music of his contemporaries at Brainfeeder and Low End Theory.
“The most popular great DJ in LA... wowing both bro-step hordes and avant-garde diggers…any song he spins feels remixed to Richter-popping intensity.” LA Weekly
Enter Gaika: the unsigned underground artist making music fresh from Brixton, where he was born and raised. With a warped, electronic blend of grime, dance hall, garage, hip hop and R&B, Gaika takes the sonic textures of the streets and crafts them into brand new, glistening shapes. "I like the idea of putting these organic sounds into a weird, mechanical space," he tells me, and in his debut mixtapeMachine you can feel it – the hyper-real sound of South London being transformed into something alien-like and digital, and in turn, utterly unique."
Justin McNulty aka KUTMAH moved to the United States when he was twelve years old, grew up in Hollywood, California and ultimately made a name for himself as a talented underground artist & DJ. An intrinsic member of eclectic Los Angeles-based music collective 'Dublab', in 2004 Kutmah launched the seminal club 'Sketchbook', which forged fundamental roots of the now-infamous LA beat scene. KUTMAH has since toured Europe playing shows with Saul Williams, Flying Lotus, Gonjasufi and The Gaslamp Killer.
Buttering Trio is a trip hop trio from Tel Aviv, Israel. The band released their debut full length album ‘Toast’ through Tel Aviv based label Raw Tapes Records. Hailed as being “dope as fuck” by Snoop Dogg himself, the beat based electronic trio craft densely layered and sophisticated neosoul akin to Quadron, Georgia Anne Muldrow or Little Dragon. Their music combines ballads and beats in a manner that redefines trip hop: deep, melancholic tunes accompanied by a groove that plays on the aesthetics of Dilla with a Mediterranean twist.
Combo tickets are available which entitle the holder to attend both of The Gaslamp Killer's shows at Village Underground on Friday 18 March for a reduced price.
